DOWNWINDRUSH

DOWNWIND RUSH / FIELD NOTES

Choose gear for the paddle ahead.

A practical equipment guide, focused on fit, conditions and usefulness rather than a shopping list.

PFD: fit comes first

Choose a personal flotation device suitable for your activity and the requirements where you paddle. Check that it fits securely without preventing rotation or a comfortable stroke. Try it while seated and with the clothing you expect to wear. Storage pockets are useful only if the equipment remains accessible and the extra bulk does not interfere with movement. Ask a qualified retailer or instructor about suitability; a product name alone cannot establish compliance for every location.

Paddle: make it manageable

Blade size, shaft length and adjustment range should suit the paddler. A larger blade is not an automatic improvement: consider whether you can maintain comfortable technique over your usual distance. Trial different options where possible and check the adjustment mechanism and joins. If you are new to wing paddles, instruction and a sensible setup are more valuable than selecting by appearance.

Clothing: plan for getting wet

Consider water temperature as well as air temperature, wind exposure, sun and the possibility of immersion. Choose layers that allow movement and avoid uncomfortable seams under your PFD. Check the forecast and local advice for each outing. No single garment makes an unsuitable route or weather window safe.

Leashes and communications: choose for the environment

Equipment arrangements differ between open water, surf and moving water. Get activity-specific guidance on suitable leashes, release systems and how to use them; entanglement and separation risks need different consideration in different environments. Carry suitable communications in a way you can access after a capsize, rather than relying on a device stored out of reach.

Transport and everyday care

Budget for appropriate racks, secure tie-downs and a way to protect the ski in transit. Inspect straps and fittings, follow manufacturer instructions and check the load before driving. After paddling, follow the equipment maker’s cleaning, drying and storage guidance. Small checks can reveal worn components before the next outing.

Why I use Shokz for downwind paddling

My experience with open-ear listening, clear music and kilometre audio updates—and the limits to keep in mind when using headphones on the water.
