DOWNWIND RUSH / FIELD NOTES
Choosing your first surfski
A ski you can paddle confidently is a more useful starting point than one chosen only for its racing reputation.
Start with your intended use
Describe where you will paddle most often, who you will paddle with and what experience you already have. Flat-water fitness, club racing and open-water downwind paddling place different demands on the paddler. Be realistic about the conditions available to you each week rather than buying solely for an occasional ideal day.
Put stability before ambition
A narrower or more demanding ski may look appealing, but balancing takes attention away from an effective stroke. Choose a level that lets you paddle with control in the conditions you are ready for. Model labels are only a starting point: body size, experience and the way a particular ski behaves all affect the decision.
Check fit in person
Make sure the seat is comfortable, the footplate adjusts to your leg length and you can operate the steering without straining. Spend more than a few minutes assessing comfort. Pressure points and an awkward seating position are easy to miss during a showroom visit and difficult to ignore during a longer paddle.
Arrange an appropriate trial
Try suitable models in controlled conditions with knowledgeable support. Assess getting in and out, turning, comfortable paddling and whether the setup is adjustable enough for you. Practise remounting with supervision appropriate to your experience. Avoid treating a successful trial on sheltered water as proof of readiness for rough conditions.
Budget for the whole setup
Include a correctly fitted PFD, suitable paddle, transport arrangements and the safety equipment appropriate to your location. Ask about servicing, spare parts and after-sales help. If considering a used ski, inspect its condition and adjustment systems carefully and seek an experienced assessment where damage is uncertain.
Questions to take to a demo

- Can I trial it and check fit before committing?
- What maintenance and replacement parts will I need?
- What instruction would help me use it confidently?
